THE WORLD'S MOST POPULAR POWER METER.

In 2005 we introduced the world’s first-ever wireless powermeter – and we’ve been striving to improve upon it ever since. Enter the G3, the third generation of hub-based power meters.

The G3’s design allows for a simple, straight-forward way to measure power. By mounting the strain gauges in an area where external forces, such as spoken tension, cannot impact power measurement, the PowerTap G3 is able to deliver +/- 1.5% accuracy ride after ride. More than just a powermeter, The G3 delivers speed, cadence and power with pin-point accuracy all in one product. And its ability to be easily switched between bikes means you’ll never miss a watt.

  • Hub weighs a mere 325 grams
  • Wider flanges for a stiffer overall wheel
  • Smaller overall hub profile
  • New field-serviceable electronics
  • Powermeter accuracy of +/- 1.5%

I bought the G3 hub when I decided to go with a new set of Reynolds carbon wheels. Previously I had the first release of Garmin power meter peddles. I had so many frustrating issues with the Garmin peddles that it forced me to research other meters available. After my own research and then numerous discussions with fellow riders I decided to go with the PowerTap G3. I heard both but great reviews of the G3 for its simplicity and reliability but what really pushed the decision was the consistent rave reviews of PowerTap customer after sale support. I couldn't be happier with the decision! I move these wheels, and my power meter, back and forth between my two road bikes and my cyclocross bike all the time. Even after I thought I knew and loved everything about my G3 I was surprised the first time I switched my wheels between bikes. I hadn't switched my speed/cadence sensor for that ride but when I started riding my Garmin 810 was showing me my speed and more surprisingly my cadence. After the ride I immediately did some more research and learned that the G3 produces this cadence data natively by calculation. I immediately removed my speed/cadence sensor and have never missed it!
The G3 hub power meter is the best!!! Money well invested!!!

Powertap hub works well. It should be known that when it needs to be serviced it will cost around $400. Also the freehub body is soft and also needs to be replaced every few years for around $100. The powermeter is good but it needs regular input of money.

Comments about G3 Hub 20 HL Shimano:

I bought my G3 to replace a stolen SL+ I'd purchased in 2013, summer of 2015. Before the prices came down so wonderfully. Even after paying a couple hundred dollars more I think pt hubs are a great value. I built the 24 hole G3 into a flo 30 rim. My 2011 SL+ has been in 3 rims and still works flawlessly, it's internals were updated by Saris when the torque tube went out. These hubs are a big investment but they are quality hubs akin to other high end hubs plus the high quality data they provide and their ease of use and interchangeability makes them, imho, the best power meter solution for my situation.

The super low cost on the GS model makes me want to build up another wheelset.

Comments about G3 Hub 20 HL Shimano:

Several years ago I needed an affordable way to measure my ouput on the bike while training for my first Ironman. My Powertap Hub (Pro+) exceeded my expectations. The hub has paid for itself 3 times over since I purchased it. I've put a ton of miles (trainer and outdoors) on this hub and the power readings are just as accurate as the day I purchased it. This hub has made me train smarter and race stronger.

Comments about G3 Hub 20 HL Shimano:

I had looked at power meters for a long time, considering all of the options and potential types of power meters. I have been more than pleased with the G3 hub. I feel like the data is reliable, gives me a realistic total power number (while providing me with cadence to boot), and once setup is something that I can simply forget about (the unit, not the numbers, that's the fun part)! I had it laced into a new hoop to match my current wheel set, so now I have a perfectly matched and integrated system. If I want power on another bike, it is so quick and easy to simply swap out a rear wheel. My only regret is that I didn't start training with power sooner!

Comments about G3 Hub 20 HL Shimano:

I have used the PowerTap hub for seven years. I'm a competitive masters road racer and this product has been very easy to work with e.g. swapping wheel between my bikes. Overwhelmingly, the PowerTap hub has been consistent and reliable in providing ride data. This product has definitely helped me squeeze maximum watts out of my body on the hard training days while ensuring I go really easy on the light days.

PowerTap has been really good to work with over the years when my hub required servicing. I have found both their servicing cost and service turn-around time to be very competitive, especially since I don't like to go too long without this training tool!

I bought this 2nd hand built into Mavic CXRs and love it. Training and racing with power has brought me up a level with consistent improvement gains. My only gripe would be that it's built into my race wheels so transferring it to my regular bike or winter banger isn't an option. But I've seen enough to want to save for P1 pedals in the long term and will pass the hub onto another rider

                    Q:

Hello. My G3 Hub pairs beautifully with my GARMIN Fenix3 but I see a lot of variation in the power display even when I feel that my power output is almost constant (sometimes up to 100w difference). For example it is hard for me to stay in a 20w range zone even in a flat no wind ride. Is this normal? Any settings suggestion?
                    Regards.
                    Raul.

Check the calibration on the hub to make sure it's within range (either 500-550 or -30 to +30 depending on your power cap). It could also be a power smoothing with your Garmin (you'll have to adjust your Fenix3 to output data every 3 or more seconds?

Try changing the 2032 battery in the hub? Then after pairing it to your Garmins make sure you're activating the sensor on your Garmin.

Hi! I purchased a G3 (20 hole version) to install on my dura ace 7800 wheel (20 spokes). But several bike shops already told me that it would be impossible to install and that I'm better off building a new wheel. Is this correct?

Unfortunately yes, Shimano is big on proprietary stuff and the way they lay their spokes out it's not compatible with our hub.

                    Q:

The G3 measures power, speed and cadence. Is power dual sided and if so, can it differentiate between right and left? How does G3 measure speed and cadence?

                      A:

Unfortunatley the hub is not dual sided (our C1 and P1s are). The G3 measures the speed of your wheel through a magnet. There is a virtual cadence algorithm built into the hub that looks for power points of your foot pushing down for your power.

You will have power and speed along with a virtual cadence.

                    Q:

What are the differences between the GS and G3 hubs? I see that the GS is only 24 spoke where the G3 has options. Are there any other considerations to look at when selecting either of these, other than price?

The main difference is the J pull of the G3 hub and the straight pull of the GS hub; and the number of spoke counts offered.

                      A:

So, if you are running a Shimano 10 speed cassette on an 11 speed hub, you will need the 1mm spacer provided with the Shimano 10 speed cassette PLUS a 1.8mm spacer to make up for the added width of the 11 speed freehub body. If you are running a Sram 10 speed cassette, there is no 1mm spacer needed behind the cassette.
