Great Product and Value for Power and Fitness enthusiasts!

By

from Atlanta, GA

Pros

  • Accurate
  • Compact Design
  • Easy To Use
  • Super awesome HR strap materials!

Cons

  • Does not work while swimming

Best Uses

  • Cycling, Mountain Biking

Comments about PowerCal Bluetooth Smart:

I used the belt extensively on my mountain bike training and racing time for one year. Works awesome as a general training tool and you can track your fitness progress over longer rides. It is not as accurate for race decisions or for short second-like power bouts. However, it worked beautiful on shorter (~30min to 1hr) rides as well as 6hr and 12hr events and races. Great tool for someone who wants to start using Power Data to track fitness! I wish there was a version that can be used in the water for someone to use during a triathlon race.

It's great for what it does

Comments about PowerCal Bluetooth Smart:

Obviously, this won't be as accurate and responsive as a pedal-, crank-, or hub-based system, but it has its uses. Firstly, its portability. You can snap this on and get a good approximation of long-term power and HR. This is the second unit that I've owned, and the newest one has the Bluetooth option as well as the ANT+ feature. On the latter, if you have an LYC (Little Yellow Computer or Cervo), the watt meter won't work but the heart-rate monitor will. I did use the desktop client to re-calibrate this against a workout using a PowerTap hub, but that's not really required for what I use it for. The second part is where this unit comes into its own. I use this in a spinning class and other activities that you can't bring in your more-accurate watt meters. For me, the PowerCal serves as a "dummy load" in order to have something to plug in to my training software. It will lag a little bit on the shorter intervals as HR catches up with effort, but longer intervals are fine. Overall, I get numbers that fine-tune my training.

Best value for power training

By

Pros

Cons

    Best Uses

    • Commuting
    • Long Rides

    Comments about PowerCal Bluetooth Smart:

The best value for power training. Accurate enough to get power feedback (within +/-5% accuracy for 20 and 60 minute threshold tests) and the easiest system by far to swap between bikes. Have been using 4+ years and still going strong. Used with Edge 500 and 510 (Have ANT+) without a problem. System even tells me when battery is running low and you simply swap the CR2032 coin cell battery out. Have only replaced battery twice in 4 years after 15k+ miles.

Very simple to use product for not much more money than a standard heart rate strap.
The data is not as accurate as a full priced power meter but at this price you wouldnt expect that.

        Comments about PowerCal Bluetooth Smart:

This is my second one -- I bought it just to have a backup, though my first one has been flawless going on a couple years. It's a great product. No it's not a full-blown power meter but it's not meant to be. It's also only a FRACTION of the cost of one. It gives you a rough estimation of your overall power, and great to give you an idea what your NP, IF and TSS are. You can compare from one ride to the next. If you're a road racer and using power for training then you'll need a true power meter but as a mountain biker just looking for a ballpark range then this product is perfect.

How can you build a blue product, that doesn't work with your own computer. Is worthless. Doesn't work with any other third party app, with the exception of strava. I can't figure out why. The reason I wanted is to record the workout and track HRV, using a third party app.

From what I've read and watched on your site it appears that you don't need the speed/cadence sensor to use this product. is that correct? Can it be used per say in a spin class where a speed/cadence senor isn't possible?

It is not, you need the dual band PowerCal (30240) because Garmin only accepts ANT+ signals

            Q:

Thanks to Paul for helping me identify that the way to Sync to my iPhone was to do so through the PT app. Sync'd straight away and reporting good data. However I have been unsuccessful at syncing with my cycle computer (Magellan Cyclo Mia 505), speed/cadence sensors & heart rate sensors not discover-able. This means I can't get a visual on the data while i ride (without pulling out my phone) which makes it pretty pointless. I can't find anywhere a list of cycle computers that it is compatible with. Does such a list exist? Can anyone point me in that direction? Why make external sensors that are not compatible with most devices that will display this data....doesn't make sense to me.

Unfortunately the Magellan is not compatible with your sensors. You will need a Bluetooth 4.0 Smart compatible head unit and here is DC Rainmaker's list: https://www.dcrainmaker.com/product-comparison-calculator

Otherwise the Wahoo Elemnt is compatible

Hi, very excited when my PowerCal arrived. Brand new straight out of the box, BLE version - tried pairing with an iPhone 7 & then Magellan 505. It wasn't discoverable on either device. I swapped out the battery for a brand new one. Still neither device would pick it up. I wet the electrotes and jumped around a bit to try get the heart rate going. Still not discoverable. Is there anything else I can try before returning it?

I have the powercal and speed/ cadence sensor. I had issues too with the battery being flat when arrived. Replaced battery and it worked with iphone. I now have iphone 7 now and don't recall syncing sensors. I think I just downloaded the powertap app and switched on Bluetooth and it worked. It's a great package once you get it going. I stopped using garmin and just use phone on the bars. I get full data with the app. Also syncs with Strava.
              Good luck

I want to use the PowerCal BT with my Polar V800. I paired is as PowerCal and the V800 asked me about my cranck length. I cannot pair it again as a heart-rate-Monitor. When I'm using the cycling Profile it shows the PowerCal as a power-meter with the bike-logo but I'm not receiving a heart-rate. Any advice to solve that?

That could be the parameters on your Polar; the PowerCal can transmit watts so the Polar V800 might be confused? Pair it only as a heart rate strap.
